Power Book III: Raising Kanan is a popular crime show that started on the Starz network in 2021.
The series works as a prequel and the second spinoff of Power, charting the formative years of Kanan Stark as he climbs the criminal ranks as a drug dealer in Queens, New York during the 1990s.
Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson played Kanan Stark in the first Power, but Mekai Curtis plays his younger self in Power Book III.
With Raising Kanan slated to return for Season 3 in December 2023, it's time to (re)-introduce the major cast of characters and supporting players who stand out the most in the beloved TV drama.Kanan Stark, played by Mekai CurtisMekai Curtis gets the lead as Kanan Stark. When the show starts in 1991, Kanan is 15 years old and lives with his mother, Raquel Thomas, in Jamaica, Queens.
After being raised by gangsters and criminals his entire life, Kanan is determined to join the drug business his mother runs. Mekai asks his uncles Marvin and Lou-Lou to help him reach his goal. Kanan must, however, come to terms with the fact that his real father is a police officer.
Curtis got his start in acting when he was in an episode of the popular series Arrested Development in 2013 and an episode of Girl Meets World in 2014. While Power Book provides Curtis with his first real mature part as an adult, he gained valuable acting experience by starring in the Disney Channel TV shows Kirby Buckets and Milo Murphy's Law.
Patina Miller plays Raquel "Raq" Thomas in the acclaimed Starz original TV show. Raq is Kanan's mother and one of the two biggest druglords in Queens.
Despite her crime, Raq wants to keep Kanan out of the drug business and protect from him harm at all costs. Even though Raq wants Kanan to be safe, she does what she needs to do to stay alive and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty if it helps her business.
Miller has been in a lot of famous films and TV shows besides her role as Raq Thomas. Before she was in both Hunger Games: Mockingjay films, she was on the TV show All My Children. She also played Queen Isola in The Many Saints of Newark, which is a predecessor to The Sopranos.
Miller's most well-known part, though, is as Daisy Grant on the political drama Madam Secretary, which she played for six seasons and 116 episodes.Malcolm Howard, played by Omar EppsMalcolm Howard is played by Omar Epps. Kanan's real father is a well-known NYPD detective named Malcolm.
A lot of Kanan's problems come from the fact that he thinks his father is the famed gangster Def Con Stark. Malcolm, on the other hand, is trying to hide the fact that he is Kanan's father while he arrests criminals in Queens who work for Raq's business. As always, Epps gives a performance with a lot of depth.
Power Book III is a given, since Epps has been playing for 30 years. Epps always stands out on screen because of his natural command, whether he is in Juice, The Programme, Scream 2, or Love & Basketball.
Epps has also shown that he can be believable on TV by playing Dr. Eric Foreman in House and Issac Johnson in Shooter, two shows that, like Power Book III, couldn't be more different from each other. As Marvin Thomas, London BrownMarvin Thomas is shown by London Brown. Marvin is Kanan's uncle and Raq's older brother.
He is a violent enforcer for the drug business that his family runs. Marvin may not be as smart as his siblings, but he isn't afraid to say what he thinks about how the business should be run. Marvin is loyal to a fault above all else. This is most clear when he takes care of his daughter, Jukebox.Brown is well known for playing Reggie in the HBO sports show Ballers.
His smile in that role is hard to forget. He has also been in shows like "The Hustle" and "American Soul" on TV. The films Tales from the Hood 3 and Real Talk both have Brown in them.
Given how well Brown has done on the show so far, it wouldn't be surprising if he got a bigger part in Season 3.
