Little House on the Prairie Star Melissa Gilbert Talks About 'Half Pint' Hitting Menopause — and Why It's a 'Gift' to Grow Old

At 59, the actress has recently launched Modern Prairie, her lifestyle brand catered towards older women. She has been happily married to actor Timothy Busfield for 10 years.

"It is a wonderful occasion to honor the beauty of growing older." Melissa Gilbert has come to understand that as time passes and we grow older, our perspective naturally evolves.

Over ten years ago, when the Little House on the Prairie star was 47 and participating in Dancing with the Stars, she recalls being preoccupied with the desire to maintain her youthfulness. She would gauge her progress based on a specific number on the scale.

One of her most delightful moments on the show occurred when she had shed a significant amount of weight and was able to wear a costume previously worn by DWTS pro Peta Murgatroyd, who is more than 20 years younger than her. "I was filled with excitement," she recalls.

Seated in the kitchen of her upstate New York cabin on a serene autumn morning, her graying hair neatly tied up, Gilbert reflects upon the version of herself that was preoccupied with age.

"It's quite an interesting thing to take pride in," she remarks. Now what I'm particularly proud of is my newfound skill in quilting! Life has certainly undergone some changes. That's life as one approaches 60. Starting at the age of 9 in 1974, Melissa Gilbert portrayed the character of "Half Pint" Laura Ingalls Wilder on the beloved TV series Little House on the Prairie.

Over the course of the show's nine seasons, Gilbert grew up in front of her fans. She continued to attract attention as a prominent figure in the young Hollywood scene of the '80s, forming relationships with other notable celebrities such as Rob Lowe and Billy Idol.

At the age of 59, Gilbert is happily married to fellow actor Timothy Busfield, known for his roles in Thirtysomething and The West Wing.

She has also embarked on a new venture, her own lifestyle brand for older women called Modern Prairie. Gilbert has expressed contentment with her current stage in life, no longer longing for her younger years.

Getting older is not a condition to be treated. "It's time we celebrate it," she kindly suggests. I find it truly remarkable that I have the opportunity to age gracefully.
