Teacher imprisoned for 12 years after defiling a student in class 3



The Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court sentenced a 28-year-old student teacher at a private school in the Eastern Region to 12 years in prison with hard labour.

When Enoch Amponsah initially appeared in court, before His Honour Kwase Apiatse Abaidoo, he entered a guilty plea to the charge of defilement.

Both the victim and the offender reside in the same community.According to the prosecutor, the victim went to classes on the weekends that were scheduled by her school administration. Following the classes, Enoch had her do an errand in one of the offices before having sex with her.

During the court, it was disclosed that Enoch had given the victim advice not to tell anyone about the sexual encounter.

The prosecution also stated, "The victim was lured again by the teacher for several sexual encounters in his room on different dates in October and November.



"Her mother's misgivings were heightened by her incapacity to walk. Following interrogation, the victim told her mother that she had been having sex with the teacher, also referred to as Sir Enoch.

Enoch was apprehended and charged when the mother filed an official complaint with the authorities.

The convicted party acknowledged in his statement that he had defiled the victim five times.

The Criminal Offence Act, 1960 (Act 29) defines defilement as follows in Section 101: (1) A child under the age of sixteen who has natural or unnatural carnal knowledge is considered defiled for the purposes of this Act.

Anyone found guilty of carnally knowing a female under the age of fourteen, with or without the girl's agreement, faces a minimum sentence of twelve months in jail and a maximum sentence of ten years in prison. 

This constitutes a second-degree crime.

In the same Municipality, Lower Manya Krobo, a Sodomy case involving a teacher from a private school and a former pupil dating back fourteen years is pending in court.
